日語ミニストリー Nichigo Ministry 01-22-2026
私たちのウェスレー合同メソジスト教会はその名の通り、教団としての合同メソジスト教会（United Methodist Church、以下UMC）に属しています。そのUMCが設立されたのは、ごく最近の1968年の事でした。The Methodist Church とthe Evangelical United Brethren (EUB) Churchが合併してUMCとなりました。勿論、そのルーツは新約時代、西暦33年とされる聖霊降臨日（ペンテコステ）に遡る事は言うまでもありません。
その後初代教会はエルサレムを中心に発展していくのですが、パウロの3度にわたる伝道旅行によって福音はローマ帝国の諸地域に広がり、西暦380年には皇帝テオドシウス1世によってローマ国教となりました。でもその後も宗教的分裂を繰り返し、西方教会、東方教会、またアフリカなどの諸教会に分かれていくのですが、ドイツのマルティン・ルターとスイスのジャン・カルヴァンによる16世紀の宗教改革で、教会は大きくカソリックとプロテスタントに分かれていきます。
でもこの時にプロテスタントと言う宗派があったわけではなく、バプティスト派、長老派、そして英国国教会など私たちにも馴染み深い宗派が生まれました。そして私たちのUMCの前身であるメソジスト教会（Methodist）は18世紀にJohn Wesley が弟のCharles Wesleyと Oxfordの学友たちと一緒に興した改革運動によって生まれました。初めは数人で守っていた聖書研究会が、やがてこうした世界的な教会になっていったというのは、なんだか興味深い話です。
彼らが大切にしたのは、信仰による原罪の赦し、そして社会正義でした。そして形式ではなく行動を、と呼びかけます。その精神は今のUMCにも、そして私たちのウェスレー教会にも受け継がれているのではないでしょうか。日語からも多くの方が参加しているCompassion MinistryやGrant Elementaryへの支援、また Day of Remembranceへの積極的な参加など、地域社会のための様々な活動はその一つと言えます。教会は礼拝の場所ですが、同時に奉仕の場でおあります。その両方があって、私たちの進行が養われていくのでしょう。
次週1月25日の第四日曜日は、2か月ぶりにチャペルで日語礼拝を守ります。礼拝説教は山本一先生が担当して下さいます。皆様のご出席をお待ちしています。

Our Wesley United Methodist Church, as its name suggests, belongs to the United Methodist Church (UMC) as a denomination. The UMC itself was established quite recently, in 1968, through the merger of The Methodist Church and the Evangelical United Brethren (EUB) Church. Of course, its roots trace back to the New Testament era, specifically to Pentecost, believed to have occurred in the year 33 AD.
The early church then developed primarily around Jerusalem. But through Paul's three missionary journeys, the Gospel spread throughout the regions of the Roman Empire. Then in the year 380 AD, it was established as the state religion of Rome by Emperor Theodosius I. However, religious divisions continued, splitting into the Western Church, Eastern Church, and various churches in Africa and elsewhere. The 16th-century Reformation led by Martin Luther in Germany and John Calvin in Switzerland then caused a major split between the Catholic and Protestant churches.
At this time, there wasn't a denomination called Protestant; rather, denominations like the Baptists, Presbyterians, and the Church of England emerged. The Methodist Church, the predecessor of our UMC, was born from a reform movement started in the 18th century by John Wesley, his brother Charles Wesley, and their fellow students at Oxford. It's quite fascinating how what began as a Bible study group of just a few people eventually grew into this global church.
What they valued was forgiveness of original sin through faith and social justice. They called for action, not mere formality. That spirit lives on in today's UMC and in our Wesley Church, doesn't it? Our various community activities exemplify this spirit—such as the Compassion Ministry and support for Grant Elementary, which many Nichigo members participate in, and our active involvement in the Day of Remembrance. While the church is a place of worship, it is also a place of service. Both aspects nurture our growth.
Next Sunday, January 25th, the fourth Sunday of the month, we will hold Japanese worship in the chapel for the first time in two months. Reverend Kazuyoshi Yamamoto will deliver the sermon. We look forward to your attendance.
