This gathering started 26 years ago as one of Wesley UMC's Nichigo-bu (Japanese speaking) mission activities. Its main mission and purpose are to provide a helping hand to newcomers from Japan. It provides a focal point to get to know one another and provides an opportunity to share participants' lives and experiences.
The name "Saffron Kai" is derived from the Saffron flower which blooms in the desert. It signifies that although the newcomer's living conditions are dictated by an unfamiliar foreign land and customs, one can still bloom beautifully as does the saffron flower.
This group has published "Santa Clara Living Guide", a book which offers helpful and essential items which aid in a newcomers' everyday life.
