Our Wesley Church Capital Campaign
Leadership Team, composed of the chairpersons of the nine Campaign
committees, met this week with Susan Peters, the Executive Director of
the Calif-Nevada Annual Conference UM Foundation. Over the next four
months, Susan and her team of campaign consultants, Rev. George
Nishikawa and Ruth Burgess, will help us to raise $800K+. Susan and her
team have worked with many churches (most recently, Centennial UMC in
Sacramento and St. Paul UMC in Fremont) to achieve their fundraising
goals.
In the next several months, these
chairpersons will be recruiting a host of Wesley church members and
friends to help us achieve our goal. As these already busy individuals
have stepped up to accept their respective responsibilities, when
asked, please consider doing the same.
We will follow a proven, successful
plan. We will be following a plan which has proven successful many
times in a number of churches throughout Northern California. However,
a plan without people making it work remains a plan. Between now and
May, we will be calling upon each of you to join us in helping to
achieve our goal (through pledges and donations) of raising the $800K
plus over the next five years.
The Soko property is a
once-in-a-lifetime purchase. Previous attempts to purchase an adjacent
property (to expand our “property footprint” has failed because the
property owner either did not wish to sell or other issues were
involved. This time, however, the sellers want to sell their property
to Wesley and negotiations will close within the next 90 days. Another
opportunity like this may not appear again. Although the property's
current tenants will continue to use the property, a lot of space still
remains for meetings (large upstairs room), offices, and space for
much-needed storage.
An opportunity to grow our church's
ministry. As Wesley continues to grow and our need for larger
facilities become increasing evident, future generations will have the
option to expand our church without having to consider moving Wesley to
an entirely new location outside of Japantown. Therefore, in the next four months, we will asking everyone to “join
hands” to achieve our goal. Although the economic climate has improved
somewhat, the Campaign Committee recognizes it remains a challenging
time for many. We ask for everyone’s prayer as we begin to move forward
with this very timely and important project to benefit our Lord’s work
and to benefit our future generations who will follow in our footsteps. Rev. George Nishikawa, a member of Susan Peter’s fundraising team,
closed our Leadership Team meeting with the following prayer: The
Wesley Campaign is now in the thoughts and hearts of her people. With
Wesley’s long history of ministry, this Campaign will launch into the
future with vision, plans and purpose. By your Grace, bless all efforts
that the success shall be in continuous hope for your Kingdom

Host families needed
for Japanese students - Rev.
Aratani, students arrive March 23-28, 2012. Rev. Izuru Aratani (former
Nichigo
Pastor
of Wesley UMC and present chaplain of the Kyoai Gakuen Senior
High School in Gunma, Japan) and Mr. Hideyuki Murakami (International
Relations Department Chair and English teacher at Kyoai Gakuen) will
bring 18 high school students to visit the Bay Area for a total of two
weeks.
The
focus of their stay is to experience life in the U.S., visit some
of the surrounding attractions and places of interest, utilize their
English skills, learn about Japanese American history and people and to
interact with our MYF (high school youth). After their homestay in San
Jose they will move on to stay an additional week at the Catholic Mercy
Center in Burlingame during which they will visit San Francisco and
other places of interest.
Please consider housing two
students We are still in need of families
to provide housing for the students. Their preference is to stay in
English-speaking homes where it will be necessary for them to practice
their English language skills. We are asking host families to take two
students (for "safe sanctuary" purposes) for the nights of March 23,
25-28th. Please note that Saturday March 24th they will stay overnight
at church for an MYF Lock-in. Host families will be asked to provide
some meals and to drop off and pick up their students at church each
day. Arrangements for transportation can be made if this is difficult
for you. For more information, or if you have questions, please
contact Viki Inouye at <viki@wesleysj.net>
Many
opportunities to help - In addition to
providing homestays for the
students, there will be many other areas where volunteers and help will
be needed; for example providing potluck dishes, transportation,
putting together welcome bags, packing lunches and more! Volunteer
details will be shared after the itinerary of their week is confirmed.
Surprise
gift from Wesley - During the
homestay visit, the Cirque Du
Soleil “Totem” show will be performing at the Taylor Street Bridge. We
are excited to be able to include this show in their itinerary as
something very different for the students to see and experience. The
artistic expression, creativity and amazing costumes will tell the
story, so the concern for language translation is not as crucial. The
cost of group tickets are $40 for students and $44 for adults. We are
hoping to surprise all the students and teachers with this outing - a
gift from our church - so shhh!!! Mum's the word. In order to defray
the entire cost we are asking congregation members to make a gift
donation of ½ ticket ($22) – extra amount to cover handling fee. A wish
tree decorated with envelopes will be in the narthex on Sundays January
29 and February 5 for people who would like to make a donation toward
the purchase of tickets for the students, Rev. Izuru, and teacher
Hideyuki Murakami.
