Last full day in
Texas
| Our
last day at our site was very easy and short. All we
had to do was seal parts of the roof with caulking and repair the front
porch steps. Both mini-projects took no more than 30 minutes to
finish. After some picking up of our trash around the house, we
were
ready to assemble on top of the finished roof and take a few group
pictures. One of our pictures may look kind of funny
and you might be asking yourselves “what are they doing?!”
……...Can you guess? ........ If you guessed
the Methodist cross and flame, you are correct! |

The family
thanked us and shook our hands
before we left. Our mission was accomplished but we were not done
yet.

Back
at the dorms, we set to work cleaning the church and
the dorms we stayed in. We always want to leave the places we
stay
nicer than we found them, even if the mess was not ours. The
friendly
stray cat that had found our group a few days ago was not surviving
well on just a diet of cicadas and probably a lizard or two, so
Jennifer, Lisa, Brett, and Harvey took her to the local animal
shelter. We think she will be adopted out easily since she was so
friendly and loving, and looked healthy except for lack
of food.
As we were cleaning up the kitchen we realized that we had quite a bit
of food that we had not finished. Not wanting to waste it, some
of us
packed it up and took it across the alley behind the church to a woman
who said she’d gladly accept it.
|
As a gesture of thank you for the San Juan UMC for hosting us and
providing us with not only bathrooms, dorm rooms,
and a fellowship hall complete with kitchen,
Tommy created a 3-D origami crane and we
attached a note of thanks which we all signed and are leaving for them
to find after we leave. |

Smokey’s BBQ was our last Texan barbeque meal for
the week this evening. After this we returned to the church where
we had one last “Wesley Time” to talk about, evaluate, and reflect on
the past week. We all rated our week about an 8 out of 10 and
felt that we had done a lot of good work, instilled some hope in some
people who had suffered bad times during and after Hurricane Dolly
(July 23, 2008), and learned a lot.
Tomorrow
we will fly from McAllen, Texas to
Houston, and then on to San Jose where we will arrive around 7:45 in
the evening. We are exhausted and can’t wait to get home and see you
all.
Thank
you all for your continued love, prayers, and
support. Please pray for our safe travel and we hope that you
will support us this year as we start looking forward to next summer’s
mission trip!
