2009 Young Adult Mission Trip to Pharr, Texas

"Our First Work Day"

Day 3 - July 13
Mission Team stripping off old shingles

We arrived at our worksite in La Villa around 7am and were all on the roof working by 7:30.  We used flat and forked shovels to scrape off the existing shingles and picked up the debris and threw over the side of the roof.  This was amazingly finished by 10am.  We cleaned up the roof by picking up loose nails, hammering down raised nails and sweeping off more debris.

After this, felt was rolled out and nailed down. A local man by the name of Jose saw us working and stopped to help.  He didn't speak any English so a few of us got to practice our Spanish quite a bit! As the new felt went down, new metal edging also was nailed into place.
 Yummy homemade fajitas
Nailing on the first of many shingles

The family who lives in this house wanted to show their appreciation, so they cooked us a wonderful lunch of fajitas, ribs, and sausage cooked on the outdoor smoker. The women made rice, guacamole, and homemade tortillas for us as well.  This lunch break gave us just enough energy to go back up on the roof and start nailing down the shingles on the front side.  Around 2pm we called it quits and headed to McDonalds for a cold drink or ice cream treat to cool off.
That evening, Harvey cooked Yakisoba and we played Catch Phrase until we couldn't stay awake any longer!
