Proclaiming the Gospel
of Jesus
Christ
We are a
congregation committed to a serving ministry
in the
name of the Lord Jesus Christ. We endeavor to engage in the mission of
the church in the world through and beyond the denominational
structures as our witness to the saving Grace of our Lord.
- We
participate in programs for
helping the homeless.
- We are
exploring new possibilities
for services to the
community, such as child care and preschool nurseries.
- We are
organizing support programs
for community
organizations such as Yu-Ai Kai and the Japanese American Resource
Center.
- We offer
educational programs, such
as the Vacation Bible
School, to children in the immediate area of the church.

Celebrating Our
Cultural Heritage
We
celebrate our unique Japanese American
experience as an important expression of our faith and as a special
gift to be shared with the larger church and the community.
- We plan to
continue and strengthen
our Japanese language
ministry.
- We
celebrate and continue cultural
events, such as Nikkei
Matsuri, Aki Matsuri, and Mochitsuki.
- We resolve
to explore a theological
understanding of
culture and faith.

Growing In Faith and In Fellowship
We
endeavor to be a nurturing congregation
in the
saving Grace of our Lord Jesus Christ. We give priority to providing
opportunities for spiritual development through effective worship in
English and in Japanese and by developing support groups and study
programs for the spiritual growth of all participants.
We
plan to:
- Formulate
and implement more
intentional leadership
development programs.
- Strengthen
educational programs —
church school, youth,
adult studies — through enhancing the curriculum and involving more lay
persons.
- Nurture
and strengthen support
groups.
- Work
toward developing a more
"friendly" environment in the
congregation.
- Deepen our
understanding of
stewardship of life, talents,
possessions, and time.
- Develop
and maintain an effective
visitation program.

Commercial
Street Inn
Julian Street Inn
Commercial
Street Inn
is
a family shelter
operated by InnVision
providing a secure living environment, clothing and job searching for
single women and women with children. This is a wonderful
opportunity for a family, our youth, and anyone to see real life
stories and at the same time share a meal with our neighbors. Be
creative. Whatever you prepare will be appreciated and you will
feel good, too.
Wesley Church provides 4-6 volunteers
who plan, cook and serve one hot dinner per month for approximately 30
people.
- When
- The
first Thursday of every month from 4-7 PM is our scheduled Dinner Day.
Our dinner coordinator will gladly accommodate
individuals or groups
wishing to select a date that is more convenient for them.
Prepare dinner in the church kitchen at 4:00pm and serve dinner at
6:00pm. If there are leftovers you may either leave them at the
shelter or take them home. If you are unable to stay and serve
the meal, just drop the food off at the shelter.

plan the menu and purchase all

Stephen Ministries
Congregational Caring Ministry
There are times when
each
of us needs the care of
another person, a Christian friend, a Stephen Minister. Wesley UMC has
more than 10 trained Stephen Ministers. Some of the ministry areas in
which Stephen Ministers have been doing meaningful ministry in and
around our congregation include Crisis Care, Preventative Care, and
Follow-Up Care. Stephen Ministers are trained to care, with strictest
confidence, for:
- People who
are hospitalized
- Individuals and
families
of those facing serious or terminal illness
- Those grieving a death
or
serious loss
- Those suffering from
depression or loneliness
- The homebound and
institutionalized
- Prisoners,
ex-offenders,
and their families
- Those experiencing a
job
loss or some business or financial loss
- Those with disabilities
and their families
- Those who are new to
the
community or those in the process of leaving town
- Those needing the
support
of a Christian friend
- The separated or
divorced
and their families
- Households experiencing
a
problem pregnancy, birth, or adoption
- Those facing a life
transition
- Those experiencing a
spiritual crisis of some sort
- And more ...
It is important
to
know that a
Stephen Minister is:
- An ordinary member of the congregation just like you
- A Child
of God who
walks
beside a hurting person
- A caring
Christian
friend
who has received 50 hours of training in how to provide distinctively
Christian care\
Likewise, it is
important
to
know that a Stephen Minister is NOT:
- A
therapist or problem solver
- A casual
visitor
- One to run
errands or
give rides
If you would
like to be
visited by a Stephen Minister or know someone who may have a need for a
Stephen Minister, get in touch with the church office at (408) 295-0367.
