Wesley UMC  Escapes Major Damage

burned house
On Tuesday night, November 27, fire destroyed the boarding house just north of Wesley UMC. Unfortunately one resident lost his life.

We give thanks for the hard work of the firefighters and others for bringing the fire under control.

We are almost done with the damage and clean-up from the fire.  There are just a few more touch-up items left.

Out of the ashes we have been very busy and are finally able, not only to find the tunnel, but see the light at the end.

There are many people who need to be thanked, but we would like to thank DeeDee Azuma for all her help in coordinating all the clean-up efforts.  Without DeeDee's diligence and overseeing of the projects the jobs would have taken longer and would have had a greater impact on our church life.  Thank you, DeeDee!

As of January 8

For the period of January 7 through January 15 both the Sanctuary and the Fellowship Hall will be undergoing what we hope will be some of the last of the smoke abatement cleanup.  They will be painting both rooms which will require adustments for all members, especially for the 10:00am English Sunday Service on January 13.

Because the Sanctuary will be emptied of all pews and other items, services must be moved to the Fellowship Hall.  But because all these "moved items" have been put in the Fellowship Hall, space will be limited so members are asked to attend either our Early Service at 8:30am in the Chapel or the Contemporary Service at 11:30am, also in the Chapel.

Please note that the 10:00am Nichigo Service is unaffected and will be conducted at its normal time.

Wesley students showed their appreciation to eight San Jose Fire stations by delivering gift baskets.  These baskets included hand-made thankyou cards and posters prepared by the Sunday School and Middle School children.  The MYF (high school students) contributed the gift baskets, snack foods, calendars and Safeway gift cards and then assembled and wrapped the beautiful gift baskets.  These baskets were delivered on December 16.

On December 18, Rev. Norris and 2 church members delivered checks to the survivors of the fire from collections taken at both Wesley UMC and the San Jose Buddhist Church.  Thank you to these members who opened their hearts to help people who have lost all their personal belongings.

As of December 13

Cleanup continues with the painting of the sanctuary and the chapel.  We anticipate that cleanup should be finished soon.

Because of the ongoing work many people, groups, and organizations have had to be flexible in their schedules.  In some cases changes have had to be made with little notice.

We thank everyone for their patience and understanding.

As of December 3

Work continues with cleanup of the Fellowship Hall, Fireside Room and upstairs offices.  More items were taken to be cleaned...

We received the complete list of all the San Jose Fire Department units that responded to the fire at the boarding house.  And while the Fire Department refers to the fire as a "fatality fire" we want them to know that this was also a fire in which they rescued 3 lives and heroically protected the properties on either side of the boarding house.  Thank you to all!

Please click here to see a letter from the Public Information Officer of the San Jose Fire Department that lists all the units.

As of December 2

On Friday cleanup efforts continued.  Work people cleaned the duct work, air vents, high walls and furniture.

The upcoming week will be more of the same with most of the work being performed on the Fellowship Hall and Kitchen/Fireside Room.  We are looking forward to the completion of the work and thank all who have worked so hard to accomplish this work so quickly.

Today the members of Wesley Church were so thankful to be able to worship together, this first Sunday following the fire.  While there were adjustments to be made because of the closure of the Fellowship Hall and Kitchen, members did not complain of the extra effort needed to organize their usual Sunday activities - we were all so thankful that we had a place in which to worship!

firefighters

After church today four of us were fortunate enough to meet some of the firefighters who were on duty the evening of the fire.  They were reviewing their fire fighting strategies.

First on the scene was Fire Station #1 from Market Street with their Engine #1, Truck #1 and Battalion #1 and Battalion Chief Conant.  Additional assistance came from Fire Station #8 Engine #8, Fire Station #5 Engine #5, Fire Station #3 Engine #3 Truck #3, and Truck #4.

We are ever so grateful for their tremendous work and dedication.

air filter in Chapelcleanup in SanctuaryReported damage to the church includes broken glass and 4 slightly damaged doors.  In addition, the church has suffered smoke damage.

Smoke abatement efforts are being initiated because of the lingering effects of harmful particles in the air and on surfaces.  The Sanctuary, Chapel, offices and Fellowship Hall building (which includes the kitchen and Fireside Room) will require cleaning.  The Education wing has  been cleared for use.  The Sanctuary and Chapel carpets and pew pads have been professionally cleaned - the walls are being wiped.  Many of the rooms and outside areas will require painting, including the Sanctuary and Chapel.   Other items (including hymnals, electronic equipment, piano and organ, etc.) are being cleaned professionally.

Work on the Fellowship Hall will continue through next week.  For that reason, Hanging of the Greens, previously scheduled for December 1, will now be held December 8.

Regular services will be held Sunday, December 2.

The Church Planning Day will still be held December 1 but instead of meeting in the Fellowship Hall, we will gather first in the Conference Room for breakfast, then to the Chapel for the meeting and then will go to various classrooms for small group meetings.

Please read the words from Rev. Motoe:

“For where two or three are gathered in my name, I am there among them." (Matthew 18:20)

“God of wonders, Beyond our galaxy You are holy, holy…”  My cell phone ringtone woke me up in the middle of the night.  It was Mona letting me know that the house next to the church was on fire.  She told me that Jody and Kelvin could see huge flames from their house (one block from the church) and the church might catch fire.  I quickly put on warm clothes and was on my way to the church.  While driving on 280, I called Rev. Doug and Rev. Michi about what I had heard and I would let them know if the three of us needed to be there.

During the rest of the drive, I kept saying the prayer,  “Jesus Christ, have mercy upon us. Jesus Christ, have mercy upon us…”

On Third street, I could see smoke in the sky.  When I got to the corner of Fourth and Jackson, a police car was blocking the street and I could not go any further.  I parked my car in front of the Yu Ai Kai building and ran to the church.

I have never seen anything like that in my life.  Fire Engines were all over Japantown and police cars were everywhere.  Smoke from the house was three or four stories high and fire engines extended their cranes to pour water from the top.  Fire fighters on the roof of the church were hosing down the house.

I could not go any closer than the corner of the Fifth and Jackson.  I talked to a first response person, T.C., and he told me that the church is probably okay but he could not tell.   He would let us know when he received more updates.  A few minutes later one fire fighter told me that from his experience, the church was 90% safe from the fire and he also told me that 11 out of 12 residents in the house were fine but one was missing.

I saw Mary and Dale Sasaki, Kelvin Kamachi, Rev. Sakamoto then Rev. Michi.  The owner of the house was at the scene with his son.  A fire fighter asked the owner to follow him for debriefing.

Rev. Doug, Rev. Michi and I went to the back of the church and we could see fire fighters in the church fellowship hall.  In the Sanctuary, it was dark so we could not see very well but it looked fine and we were relieved.  A fire fighter, George, saw us in the Sanctuary and gave us updates.  We thanked him for his work and for saving the church and he told us that he was also a minister.

I am very thankful for the fire fighters and police officers, Jody and Kelvin Kamachi, Dale and Mary Sasaki, Mona Otomori, DeeDee Azuma and all the people who helped, and most of all for God that the church is standing.   However, it is a good reminder that the church is not the building but people.

As T.C. said “With Faith, you can always rebuild the church.”  We will probably repaint the wall and fix some doors but we will never stop worshiping Jesus Christ, our Savior.

This morning, San Jose Mercury news reported that “Poncho” was found in the house.  I pray for Poncho and his family, the eleven people who lost their home and for the owner of the house.

I am the church! You are the church! We are the church together! All who follow Jesus, all around the world!  Yes, we’re the church together!  The church is not a building, the church is not a steeple, the church is not a resting place, the church is the people.” UMH 558
