Wesley’s Fundraising Golf Tournament

The annual Wesley Missions Fundraising Golf Tournament was held at the Sunnyvale Municipal Golf Course on August 7. The highlight reel of the day goes to Sam Higaki, a previous tournament winner who is now going off to college to, of course, play golf. He shot a gross 65 and won the Men’s A Flight with a net 66.
We had 65 golfers take to the course and most also enjoyed a wonderful Japanese dinner catered by Sushi Maru and served up by a host of Mission Committee volunteers. The tables were decked out with healthy-looking succulent plants (Jeanne Katsuro), golf ball doggies (John Tanaka), and beautiful cloth golf-themed napkins (Terri Koike,Yumi Haraguchi and Mona Otomori). Each non-golfing guest received a gift as well (Shelley Nakashima). It was all quite delightful.
There was also a silent auction run by Paul Ueunten, with a lot of lovely prizes up for grabs…foursome play at Laguna Seca and Half Moon Bay; restaurant gift certificates, a very nice ukulele from Smiley Kai, a couple of colorful paintings for the art minded, wine, a putter, a utility club and even a Stetson hat. The Missions Committee made $2,930 which will benefit our church’s vacation Bible School and scholarships for Wesley Youth Camps.
We are grateful to our Missions committee and friends for their contribution of hours and hours of volunteer time preparing the Fellowship Hall, serving, and cleaning up. It was a long weekend for them: Judy Kanemoto, Jeanne Katsuro, Doris Tabuchi, Warren Uesato, Judy Yasutake, Bev Acuna, Terri Koike, Anne Siffle, and Cindy Fukuda.
We also thank as well our Golf Committee especially their leader, Wayne Kuwada. We thank all the committee members, Aki Kawayoshi, Dale Sasaki, Dennis Ohori, Ed Gibo, Its Yokota, John Tanaka, Monty Ichinaga, Ron Ogi, Warren Shimonishi, Barbara Hiura, Dennis Imazeki, Denny Kinoshita, Gene Kinoshita, Jim Higuchi, Leighton Horio, Paul Ueunten, and Ron Tanizawa.  Hats off to the Wesley office staff, Kelli Martines for being our registrar, doing name tags and the program with DeeDee Azuma, and Hikaru Bakoshi for her photography work.
The golf committee is thankful to Yu-Ai Kai for lending us the use of their hole sponsorship signs and has donated $400 to them as a thank you and for their upcoming fundraising golf tournament.
All told, the golf tournament netted $11,074 for Missions work.  After hearing the news of the fire that destroyed Lahaina, the Golf Committee immediately decided to send $1,000 through UMCOR along with all of our prayers.
